Summary | The course covers principles of computational biology together with the range and impact of bioinformatics tools used in biological sciences. The syllabus includes: biological databases; pairwise sequence alignment; multiple sequence alignment; next-generation sequencing; and automation of bioinformatics analyses. Previous experience of programming is not required. Lectures are supplemented by on-line exercises and tutorials and in-course assignments. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- At the end of this course the student will have a solid grounding in the basic principles of computational biology
- At the end of this course the student will have an appreciation of the range and impact of Bioinformatics tools currently used in the biological sciences.
- At the end of this course the student will have produced written reports identifying and applying appropriate tools to investigate questions in genetics.
