SummaryThis is a lecture-based module with occasional local field walks.

Subjects:
Chief styles of western architecture; vocabulary of western architecture; descriptive writing; sketching;
list descriptions.
Course description The course introduces students to the main styles and building types of western architecture, with special reference to Scotland, with a particular focus on classical, medieval, modern, vernacular and industrial subjects. Delivered through lectures and short field walks, its aims are firstly, to develop skills of close observation, and secondly, to acquire a vocabulary of architectural description.

Additional Information (Assessment) Assessment will be by means of two individual building descriptions, which will both test the same skills and will enable students to satisfy all three learning outcomes. Course grades will be 100% based on these piece of work, which will be equally weighted.
Feedback Written feedback will be given on the first description, prior to preparation of the second description.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Display a knowledge of architectural terminology and a knowledge of the main styles and building.
  2. Demonstrate an ability to accurately describe buildings in written and graphic form.
  3. Display organisational, verbal and presentational skills specific to building description.
