|Summary||As continuation of Chinese 1, the key aim of this course is to develop students' communicative competence in Chinese to intermediate level and to enable them to understand and use Chinese grammar in everyday conversations, read contemporary literary and journalistic texts without excessive use of the dictionary (in both simplified and traditional characters) and write simple letters and essays. The course will also help students prepare for their Year Abroad in China/Taiwan.
Please note this course is not available to native or near-native speakers of Chinese.
The number of weekly contact teaching hours is 7. The course consists of 3 components:
1) New Practical Chinese Reader Vol. II and Vol. III (NPCR)
2) Newspaper Clippings & Composition and Idiomatic expressions
3) Oral tutorials
1. New Practical Chinese Reader (NPCR) tutorials
In small classes, students' language skills will be taken up to intermediate level in a series of graded steps, covering grammar, vocabulary and day-to-day knowledge of life in China. Students will be expected to work on their own and in groups on a selection of different exercises adapted to a variety of learning styles. Regular feedback will be provided.
2. Idiomatic Expressions
Authentic materials are selected and adapted to Chinese 2A language level, with the aim to build up students' skills in listening and speaking, while focusing on idiomatic expressions and paving a solid path leading to their Year Abroad in China/Taiwan.
3. Newspaper Clipping & Composition
22 contact class hours aim to develop students' competence in reading original Chinese language works (in simplified and traditional characters) to write compositions of up to 300 characters in simplified Chinese and to translate from English language works into Chinese of up to 300 characters. Students will get an opportunity to enlarge their vocabulary and enhance their understanding of the context of the Chinese language. Course material is selected and adapted to expand students' knowledge of Chinese language and culture and to develop students' language skills in reading, writing and translation.
4. Oral tutorials
In small groups, students will be encouraged to engage in communication and practise their listening and speaking skills. Common themes include: cultural comparison, university campus life, festivals and food, holiday and travel, and lifestyle.

||Feedback will be offered regularly as part of learning process where appropriate, e.g. after an assignment or an assessment. Students are also encouraged to reflect upon their own learning, and make their own list of action points after each feedback session.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Read and understand short essays, fiction and select newspaper articles in simplified and traditional Chinese character forms to an intermediate level.
- Write summaries, essays and letters.
- Express their views and opinions on varied topics by participating in listening and speaking activities.
- Relate their knowledge to everyday contexts, using their skills to deal with straightforward tasks with some non-routine elements, and to prepare for familiar and routine tasks.
- Understand how Chinese grammar works and be able to apply these skills in reading and writing at intermediate level.
