SummaryStudents will be required to spend a total of 30 weeks attending university in Japan, following an approved study programme of intensive Japanese language courses.
Course description Students will be enrolled in intensive language classes at one of our partner universities in Japan for the entire academic year.


Students will be required to spend a total of 30 weeks attending university in Japan and following a programme of approved study. They will normally participate in an exchange with one of our partner universities in Japan, where Japanese language classes for foreign students will form part of the curriculum. The course aims to enable students to deepen their knowledge and understanding of Japanese language (developing their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening) and culture through living and studying in Japan.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate competence in all four skill areas of Japanese language commensurate to JLPT level N2
  2. Engage in everyday activities in Japan
  3. Take account of cultural conventions regarding politeness and register of speech when interacting with Japanese people in a range of situations
  4. Speak confidently about their dissertation topic in Japanese
  5. Apply first hand knowledge of Japanese society and culture to their autonomous research projects
