| Summary | Fieldwork and museum experience are fundamental to the study of Classical Archaeology. During the summer after their first year, students will participate in fieldwork, a museum internship or a series of museum visits over a two week period in the summer, either on a project run by staff within the School, or an project outside the School that is approved by the course organiser. Students will thus develop key practical skills in work in the field or museum at an early stage in their degree. |
| Course description |
Fieldwork and museum experience are fundamental to the study of Classical Archaeology. During the summer after their first year of study, students will participate over a two week period either in fieldwork (either a project run by staff within the School or an approved project elsewhere), in museum work or an internship, or a series of museum visits related to a Classical Art or Archaeology project. Students will thus develop key practical skills in work in the field or museum at an early stage in their degree.
Approved projects must provide students with experience in the fundamentals of archaeological fieldwork or museum work, including but not limited to, survey and excavation techniques, sampling strategies for environmental samples, artefact recovery and recording, post-excavation cataloguing and recording of material, preservation of collections and organization of exhibitions. A short reflective report on the project and tasks completed will develop key skills in communicating the results of fieldwork and/or the presentation of museum artefacts.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- demonstrate enhanced employability by developing key practical skills and confidence in archaeological field work or museum work;
- demonstrate by means of fieldwork or museum experience, key practical skills in archaeological recording, excavation methods, or preserving, organizing and analysing museum collections;
- demonstrate by means of fieldwork or museum visits, a good understanding of the aims, methods and results of an approved archaeological field work project or museum-specific project;
- demonstrate by means of fieldwork how the practical aspects of classical archaeology are developed through participation in a fieldwork project or a series of museum visits.
