| Summary | The Language of Animation is designed to develop the student's understanding and application of pre-production methods in animation. The course examines the tools used to create and develop animation, in the pre-production stage such as storyboarding, creating animatics and using animation specific narrative devices. Using a combination of lectures and practical workshops, the course will enable students to consider the vital iterative stages of animation production and some of the theories which underpin them. |
| Course description |
The Language of Animation will develop the students understanding of the process of making animation by taking a focused approach to the pre-production stage of creating animated film. The course will examine the theory and history of editing and cinematography within the broader scope of screen grammar and apply these methods to working examples. What happens when different shots are used? What animation-specific techniques can be used to develop narrative? What can the storyboard and animatic do to aid the overall animation production?
Students will consider the points raised above, exploring them in a short critically reflective essay and a portfolio of animation tests.

Other requirements | This course is open to ALL STUDENTS and enrolments are managed on a first come first served basis until the course is full. The course will be open to enrolments from Wednesday 11th September at 11.00 am. Please sign up for the course through your own School (they will advise if this is done via your PT, SSO or Teaching Office). We do not currently keep a waiting list. |

The course has two components for assessment: short reflective essay (1500 words) 50% and portfolio of film tests 50%.
All learning outcomes are weighted equally. |
| Feedback |
Formative presentations will be made in class at the mid point of the course (week 6) with verbal feedback given by course tutors and peers. Written feedback will be given on the summative submission within 15 days of submission. |
