SummaryOverall introduction to the programme and the basic sciences relevant to treatment under conscious sedation.
Course description The anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological systems will be evaluated and applied to clinical situations related to dental sedation. The pharmacology of the available drugs for dental sedation will be presented and appraised. The history of pain control in dentistry will be explored and the use of local anaesthetic evaluated.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the anatomy, physiology and pharmacology relevant to providing treatment under conscious sedation
  2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of pain pathway theories
  3. Apply knowledge, skills and understanding in using a range of local anaesthetic techniques to achieve adequate pain control
