SummaryThis Geophysics Professional Placement L10 course will be taken together with the Geophysics Professional Placement L11 course in the 4th year of the integrated Masters in Earth Physics programme.
Course description Students will spend 12 months working on a project related to the degree programme whilst employed by an approved and appropriate research company/institute (in the UK or abroad). Students will spend the majority of their placement engaged in GeoScience research relevant to the degree programme. Students are recruited by companies on a competitive basis and may choose which positions they would like to apply for based on their interests and preferred geographical location. The course provides opportunities to broaden horizons and gain valuable insight into the professional application of their chosen degree programme thus enhancing future career paths. Assessment for this course consists of marks for aspects of the performance on the placement, a written literature review, an oral presentation and e-learning coursework.

Prohibited Combinations Other requirements Pre-requisites: Must have a weighted average of 2.1 or higher in all Yr3 courses.
Prohibited Combinations: All courses other than Geophysics Professional Placement L11.
Additional Costs Travel, accommodation, visas etc. as required. Students will be salaried for the placement duration.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Execute a significant project of research, investigation or development
  2. Demonstrate competence in a range of routine and advanced skills (technical, IT etc) appropriate to the placement.
  3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the background, theories and concepts relating to the placement work undertaken.
  4. Work effectively in a professional relationship alongside qualified practitioners and, in so doing, also to exercise significant autonomy and initiative in the professional environment.
  5. Successfully communicate formally (presentations, reports etc) and informally with peers, senior colleagues and specialists.
