SummaryThis course aims to give the student knowledge of a representative sample of poetry from Latin America. Its primary focus will be on developing the student's analytical and interpretive skills through close reading, but reference will also be made to the socio-cultural context and to wider literary movements to broaden the students' knowledge of the field of Latin American literature. The students will learn to express themselves in a coherent manner in both verbal and written form, and will gain an appreciation of the value of poetry and of the problems peculiar to reading, interpreting and indeed defining poetry as opposed to other literary genres.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Develop analytical and interpretive skills through close reading of a range of poetry from Latin America.
  2. Understand the socio-cultural context and wider literary movements associated with Latin American poetry.
  3. Reflect critically and make judgements in light of evidence and argument.
  4. Extract and synthesise key information from written and spoken sources.
Reading List
Since the focus will be on a detailed, close reading approach, the number of poems covered in any one seminar will be limited, but for the exam, the students will be required to have read the full text in each case.
