| Summary | The course aims by seminar and workshop to introduce students to theoretical, historical and practical issues involved in the composition of poetry. Issues to be addressed include: the interplay of the tripartite division of poetry into sound (melopoeia), image (phanopoeia) and idea (logopoeia); the arguments for and against free verse, as opposed to the traditional patterning of metre and rhyme; methods of gathering and redrafting material. |

| Pre-requisites | A MINIMUM of 4 college/university level literature courses at grade B or above (should include no more than one introductory level literature course). Related courses such as cross disciplinary, "Freshman Seminars", civilisation or creative writing classes are not considered for admission to this course.
Applicants should also note that, as with other popular courses, meeting the minimum does NOT guarantee admission. In making admissions decisions preference will be given to students who achieve above the minimum requirement with the typical visiting student admitted to this course
having four or more literature classes at grade A.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Students who complete the course successfully will attain a broadened awareness of stylistic possibilities in poetry.
- By practice they will develop compositional skills in a way that complements more general English studies, and be introduced to the possibilities of publishing their work.
