SummaryThe dissertation course is designed to further develop the student's academic skills and ability to utilise scientific theory. The dissertation project is designed to further develop the student's understanding of the processes and planning involved in undertaking research and to develop their scientific written communication skills.

For this component, students will:
- write a dissertation in which the student demonstrates critical analysis, academic knowledge of the particular area, capacity to document and manage the process of data gathering, information management and succinct writing.
- write a reflective account of the project
- give a presentation on their project to their fellow students

Before beginning, a detailed proposal must be submitted and approved by supervisors. Students will be encouraged to develop a dissertation project that is useful and bears significant relation to their current or proposed working life.

The dissertation takes 9 months part-time and students are expected to have regular meetings with their supervisors.

Learning Outcomes
The dissertation will require a high level of commitment and application from the candidate and provides a valuable exercise in the writing and presentation of information to a standard that engages appropriately with academic conventions in relation to style, tone, structuring and referencing. Supervisors will provide support on research methodologies and other skills required for successful completion of the written reflective element.
