| Summary | This 10-credit course aims to ensure that the student understands how to examine patients appropriately and thoroughly. Key aspects of how to communicate effectively with patients and their families, including giving complex information, breaking bad news, shared decision-making, handling anger and distress, and addressing complaints about care, will be covered. |
| Course description |
We will discuss the theory underpinning good communication with patients, and describe and show (using video) examples of good and bad consultations. We will also discuss the common ward-based medical procedures that middle grade doctors need to be familiar with, and will use interactive tools (such as virtual stethoscope), to demonstrate the anatomy and clinical risks associated with these procedures. Additional resources (such as MOCK PACES exams) will be available at this stage and later in the course, for those attempting MRCP part II (PACES).

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and conceptualise how to examine a patient competently, and define what makes a good patient consultation
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the anatomy, principles and risks associated with common ward based medical procedures, namely lumbar puncture, central line insertion, chest drain insertion, bone marrow biopsy, arterial line insertion and ascitic drainage
- Appraise the different social, verbal and non-verbal skills required to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues
- Communicate, using appropriate methods, to a range of audiences with different levels of knowledge/expertise
- Practise in a wide and often unpredictable variety of professional level contexts (working with clinicians/basic scientists/allied health professionals)
