SummaryThe Classical Arabic Literature course provides an introduction to the study and critical appreciation of classical Arabic poetry and 'belles-lettres'. All materials will be read in Arabic and discussed in English.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Students will gain a good knowledge of the key developments in Arabic 'belles-lettres' and poetry from their respective beginnings to the end of the 'Abbasid' period.
  2. Students will gain a taste of the works of major classical poets and prose writers through intensive reading of select examples.
  3. Students will learn to locate classical authors and texts within their historical and cultural context.
  4. Students will learn to read and understand a range of classical Arabic texts in the original language.
  5. Students will learn to critically examine the different genres, themes, styles and techniques found in classical Arabic prose and poetry.
