SummaryComputer based tools and learning environments are increasingly used in teaching and learning. This course explores how such educational systems can be made more adaptive and interactive, in order to improve the quality and effectiveness of the teaching that they provide. The theoretical basis of adaptive learning environments will be examined. A number of techniques and examples of existing systems will be considered, This course aims to better equip students with the skills to design and evaluate intelligent and adaptive educational systems. The course presentation will comprise a mixture of lectures and group-based task-led seminars.
Course description The issues addressed will include the following:

Previous development of teaching systems and limitations; adaptivity in relation to the domain and the learner

Methodology: empirically informed and user centred design; involving students and teachers in the design process

Modelling and simulating domain knowledge; qualititative modelling

Modelling the user: diagnosis, errors and misconceptions; modelling affect

Pedagogical Issues: theoretical and educational basis of teaching tools; using Pedagogical Agents;

Models of interaction and communication; Educational dialogue;

Evaluating the design and effectiveness of educational software;

Recent developments and the state of the art.

Relevant QAA Computing Curriculum Sections: Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Intelligent Information Systems Technologies, Multimedia

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of theoretical approaches and methods used in previous systems through their application to new teaching tasks
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the design issues in developing educational tools and environments through completing a number of design tasks.
  3. Identify appropriate techniques for use in the design and implementation of adaptive learning environments, and assess their relative strengths and weaknesses in relation to specific tasks.
  4. Describe methods that can be used to evaluate educational systems and apply these to existing systems.
  5. Critically evaluate the state of the art in selected topics through a literature review.
Reading List
* A reading pack of research papers, and references to specific systems, will be provided.
* Further references sources will be recommended as required.
