| Summary | This course seeks to develop knowledge of figurative language, particularly as it is manifest in texts of various kinds in the history of English. The course will provide an overview of classical rhetoric, and show how many of the practices identified by early philosophers are characteristic of the language of various types of discourse in the present day. The course has a further objective of introducing students to the place of figurativeness - particularly, though not exclusively, the place of metaphor and metonymy - in the field of cognitive linguistics. |
| Course description |
This course explores the relationship between figurative and non-figurative language. In particular, we concentrate on the nature of conceptual metaphor and metonymy, and their place in cognitive linguistic frameworks. We look at theoretical approaches to metaphor, and at how experimental approaches to metaphor have refined the theory. We also look at how metaphor, metonymy and other figures of speech are used in texts of various kinds. In particular, we consider the use of figurative language in political discourse and in literary works.
