Course description |
This course is a single training module, housed only on Learn, for undergraduate students conducting research projects to be trained in general research ethics and to consider the ethical aspects of their project. It should be completed by all undergraduate students who plan to conduct a research project, prior to the submission of their ethical protocol for panel review by the LEL Ethics Committee. The course introduces students to the complex issues around the ethics of conducting research with live, human participants, and further guides students in the planning and organization processes of linguistic research. Competency in research ethics is of increasing professional importance, and the entirety of the course constitutes a valuable transferable skill.
The course is specifically aimed at Dissertation students, but it can be completed by any undergraduate student who is expecting to undertake an individual research project that involves ethical considerations, even if the project is for coursework. The decision of whether or not a student should take the training module is up to the instructor or supervisor, whichever is more relevant to the situation.
The module contains some information about what research ethics is and then asks the student to take a couple short quizzes to gauge comprehension. Once the students have passed those quizzes satisfactorily, they are guided through questions related to the ethical considerations of their specific research project. Students can take the quizzes as many times as they need to. For students who approach the task fully prepared, it is expected that the total completion of the module should take no more than an hour.
