SummaryThis course explores syntactic change in the history of English. In addition, it provides an opportunity to gain some practical experience of collecting and analysing data on historical syntax, as well as giving some training in the use electronic text corpora and the software needed to extract data from these corpora. (The practical work will be confined to early and late Modern English.)

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of some important syntactic changes in the history of English, as well as of different accounts of these changes
  2. relate these changes to models for the description of syntax and / or syntactic change, as appropriate
  3. collect and analyse syntactic data from the Modern English period
  4. extract data from electronic text corpora
