Matrix groups: the general and special linear groups and subgroups preserving bilinear forms. The Lie algebra of a matrix group: the exponential map. Transformation groups: the group acting on itself and on its Lie algebra: the adjoint representation. Quaternions.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand matrix groups and their Lie algebras, as an application of linear algebra.
  2. Understand transformation groups and the notion of invariance.
  3. Gain an appreciation of the interplay between different areas of mathematics in the setting of matrix groups.
