SummaryThis course aims to explore personal and professional development for clinicians/practitioners within clinical and educational contexts and roles.

Participants will reflect on their own development and educational needs both as a clinician/practitioner and as an educator. They will consider the rationale for continuing professional development (CPD) and its impact upon their own career, colleagues, patients and students.

Participants will contextualise CPD, examine the factors which might influence an individual's engagement with the process and consider support strategies.
Course description This course will be comprised of 8 online lectures and 8 online one hour tutorial sessions.

Teaching resources, relevant literature and articles will be posted on Learn and participants will be expected to engage with these prior to tutorials.

Tutorials will be interactive and consist of guest speakers, small group work and group discussions.

Participants will be required to reflect upon and map their career trajectory from graduation to a point in the future before designing a PPD plan.

The reflective account and PPD plan will form the basis of the assessment tasks of this course.

Summative - PPD plan designed following reflection upon career pathway setting carefully considered goals. One x 3000 word reflective piece based on a completed PPD plan and career map.
Feedback Tutors will offer feedback on the formative assignment.

Tutors will give individual detailed feedback on the summative, end of course assignment.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Critically appraise the literature and theories underpinning personal professional development (PPD).
  2. Evaluate the processes and tools used to support PPD.
  3. Interpret the relationship between resilience, well-being and PPD.
  4. Clarify the environmental factors which enable or constrain staff development.
  5. Design a PPD plan and reflect upon its potential to impact upon career, colleagues, patients and students.
