|Summary||This course will explore the topic of occlusion in the natural dentition and the restored natural dentition. Topics will be relevant for both adult and child and adolescent patients.
The course will use recorded lectures, directed reading, tutor-led discussion, group project work all supported by specific learning tasks. The topics that will be included are, assessment of occlusion, occlusal analysis, terminology associated with occlusion, orthodontic assessment of the occlusion for child and adolescent patients, the relevance of occlusion in the dentate patient to the outcome of restorative procedures.

||Students receive informal feedback/ feed forward on a weekly basis from their on-line tutor.
Students receive formal feedback at the end of each semester based on assessed coursework and written assignments.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to assess the occlusion of a patient of any age and the selection of appropriate occlusal instrumentation and the principles of occlusal analysis in an illustrated clinical case report.
- Research and define the appropriate terminology associated with occlusion and occlusal relationships in a group project using a Wiki.
- Evaluate and discuss the clinical evidence supporting the use of occlusal splints and discuss the various methods of altering or improving an occlusal relationship using the tutor-led discussion board.
- Research and discuss the appropriate techniques and materials for making inter-occlusal records using a simulated case via the tutor-led discussion board and demonstrate the clinical application.
- Identify the principles and purpose of diagnostic waxing and discuss its use using the tutor-led discussion board.
