|Summary||This course is designed to review the skill of planning a course of dental treatment for a patient. By appraising the dental scientific literature students will adopt an evidence based approach to planning courses of treatment.
Treatment planning is an essential clinical skill for general dentists. This course will develop the skills necessary to adopt an evidence based approach. By encouraging different methods of enquiry and applying knowledge gained to the clinical situation, this course will challenge students to justify their clinical decision making. The use of simulated clinical scenarios and group discussions will add to the learning experience.

||Students receive informal feedback/ feed forward on a weekly basis from their on-line tutor.
Students receive formal feedback at the end of each semester based on assessed coursework and written assignments.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Formulate a treatment plan for a patient (of any age) respecting patients wishes and with an awareness of the financial implications of selecting one course of treatment over another, and record it in a case report.
- Critically appraise the dental scientific literature to determine the longevity of dental restorations and use that information to inform discussions with patients when selecting one course of treatment over another.
- Explore the guidelines relating to consent, particularly with regard to children and adults unable to consent for themselves, and apply this knowledge in clinical situations.
- Assess the implications of a patient's dental, medical and social history and be able to apply them in a treatment planning discussion so that a patient feels able to select one course of treatment over another in full knowledge of the risks, advantages and disadvantages. Record this discussion for assessment.
- Explore the dental scientific literature to assess the influence of a patients diet, oral hygiene and life style choices on their oral health and be able to discuss these risk factors for various treatment plans on the tutor-led discussion board.
