SummaryUsing a freely available open-source music programming environment (currently Pure Data aka PD), this course introduces creative software development for making digital music. Focusing on the tools necessary to succeed in a range of MIDI and signal processing applications, students will implement custom systems to realise their musical goals within personal aesthetic frameworks.

The necessary historical and theoretical background will support the students' technological understanding and aid the acquisition of a broad understanding of the issues of current music technology systems.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. have creative experience of music technology programming and in particular real-time programming for the creation of new music
  2. have a historical understanding of the technological developments that led to contemporary music technology practice
  3. have an understanding of the principles of and differences between analogue and digital music systems
  4. have listening experience of historical and current electronic/digital music repertoire
  5. have a secure grasp of acoustics as it impacts music technology
