SummaryThis course extends and consolidates material covered in lectures in the corequisite Population and Quantitative Genetics (BIO-5-PQGEN). It has two concurrent strands:

1)Weekly tutorials on genetics problems in natural and selected populations. The problem sets involve derivations and numerical calculations which have to be completed ahead of each tutorial session;
2)Weekly group discussions of recent key scientific papers on relevant topics. Students will have to prepare a written critique of selected papers and also contribute fully to the general discussion of the issues raised.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. At the end of this course students will be able to apply numerical and algebraic skills in deriving solutions to problems in population and quantitative genetics.
  2. At the end of this course students will have experience in scientific paper interpretation
  3. At the end of this course students will be able to produce graduate-level essays on key topics in genetics and written critiques of scientific papers
