Course description |
The course aims to teach students how to write a coherent research grant proposal in a style acceptable to a fund-awarding body.
The objectives are to:
explain the process of applying for research funding
guide the students through writing a grant application.
Train students to:
acquire information-gathering and synthesis skills;
write a coherent account of the question they are posing, including its importance and context
design the experimental strategy to solve the problem, and
discuss the research in the wider context of the value to society

50% ePortfolio workbook containing Blog, linking of experiences and skills as evidence to list of Graduate Attributes, Reflective piece on the process of making the proposal supported by evidence from the Blog that should be used in a timely fashion. |

By the nature of distance learning, feedback will be provided through on-line tutorials. There will be formative feedback on a draft proposal in good time to make use of it before submitting the summative work. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- describe the process of obtaining funding for academic research from the research councils;
- search, identify and critically evaluate the relevant literature to gain a thorough and current knowledge of a biochemistry-related topic;
- build on current knowledge of biologics to suggest new directions for investigation of a drug discovery problem;
- design the appropriate experiments to tackle the drug discovery problem;
- identify the resources required to execute the project; and prepare a relevant, coherent, and acceptable grant application.
