SummaryThis course introduces students to a range of specialist techniques used in psychological research, particularly Cognitive Neuroscience. Techniques include: EEG, fMRI, TMS, fNIRS, eye-tracking, and single-case statistics for neuropsychology.
Course description This course introduces students to a range of specialist techniques used in psychological research, particularly Cognitive Neuroscience, through a parallel series of technique-focused lectures, and practical workshops.
This course will cover the basic principles of these techniques, and their advantages and disadvantages, considering the sorts of research questions to which each might be applied.

Students are required to attend all lectures, and to attend one mandatory workshop.

Students taking the course for credit can additionally choose one optional workshop, subject to availability.

Additional Information (Assessment) Assessment on this course is by a series of short answer questions organised in sections. Students will choose ONE section. Each section will relate to more than one of the techniques covered. The word limit will be 1500 words.
Feedback Each topic provides separate opportunities for interactive discussion and feedback allowing students to assess and improve their understanding of the topic - for example, seminar-style workshops or data processing classes in which principles are applied to examples.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. understand how the research question affects the choice of technique
  2. familiarise themselves with the scenarios in which the range of design types discussed are applicable
  3. become adept at describing the major data collection and processing procedures in a variety of the areas covered
