SummaryThis individually negotiated course is associated with the exit awards from the Doctorate of Education (EdD): Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Research, Policy and Practice; and Masters Degree in Educational Research, Policy and Practice. Its relationship to these awards is specified in the following paragraph.
For those candidates whose written work on their first five courses fails to satisfy the standards required for entry to the EdD thesis stage, the EdD Board of Examiners may decide that, rather than produce a paper for a progression board, he or she be given the option of taking ahead an area of independent study of her or his own and of producing an assignment of the length, scope and depth expected on the five taught EdD courses. The topic of this area of independent study to be decided in negotiation with the EdD academic co-ordinator. On satisfactory completion of this assignment and of the the preceding five written assignments required in the first two and a half years of the degree, the EdD Board of Examiners may recommend the award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Research, Policy and Practice. If the candidate has an average mark in these assessments at Masters level, he or she may then choose to complete an appropriate dissertation to Masters' standard, of around, and not exceeding, 15,000 words. On satisfactory completion of this dissertation, the Board of Examiners may recommend the award of the MSc in Educational Research, Policy and Practice.
Once a topic for this individually negotiated course has been agreed between the student and the EdD academic co-ordinator, a written contract will be drawn up which will contain the following elements; title; rationale for taking ahead this topic; statement of approach to studying the topic, and rationale for this approach; proposed structure of the assignment; indicative bibliography; timescale and completion date.
