SummaryThe Dissertation is a major study demanding of the course member a high level of individual application and commitment to research and enquiry. It provides the course member with the opportunity to identify, reflect on and explore a topic that has implications for his/her own professional development. The Dissertation will involve a critical interrogation of the relationship between professional practice, academic theory and the design, ethics and interpretation of research.
Course description You will produce a dissertation that clearly demonstrates that, in the field of inclusive education / additional support for learning you can:
reflect critically on the relationships between theory and practice
review, organise and evaluate existing knowledge and practice
collect and present primary data, or synthesise existing data and literature, in a way which has the potential to inform and influence practice and scholarship in this area.

Feedback Students receive feedback about one chapter of their dissertation, and often have a supervision session after receiving it.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Identify and reflect critically on relevant up-to-date literature, research reports and other scholarly evidence with specific reference to the research process used;
  2. Collect and analyse evidence, justifying the approaches and techniques used, and identify the implications of these decisions in terms of the status of the evidence, and the findings based upon it;
  3. Examine critically the contribution and limitations of the study undertaken in theoretical and applied terms with regard to the practices and roles of relevant professionals;
  4. Demonstrate that the study complies with relevant ethical guidelines;
  5. Present work, observing appropriate academic conventions in relation to style, tone, paragraphing, paraphrasing, sectioning of the text, proof-reading and referencing.

Students will find their own academic sources using the University library.
Additional Information
Graduate Attributes and Skills 1. Students learn how to find academic sources and critically evaluate them independently.
2. They develop networking skills with professionals and others involved in education in order to find suitable participants.
3. Analysis and academic writing skills
Special Arrangements Students take the Planning Research course (REDU) immediately before the Dissertation course to plan their dissertation and complete an ethics form.
Study Abroad Students may collect data from another country, by arrangement with their supervisor. Absence from the university must be agreed in advance with the supervisor.
Additional Class Delivery Information The student is entitled to a minimum of 6 hours of individual supervision from their supervisor. The supervisor will provide an additional 6 hours of written feedback, comments on the work etc.
