| Summary | This course is designed to meet the requirements of the Framework for Social Work Education in Scotland, in particular the requirement to demonstrate competence in evaluating and using up-to-date knowledge of, and research into, social work practice. The course has two main purposes: first of all to enable to students to develop as research-minded practitioners; and second to enable students to prepare a research proposal for their Masters dissertation. The assessment is one formative and one summative assignment, linked to these twin goals.
The course consists of eight two hour classes. It includes lectures, case studies of social work research in action and exercises. The research introduced across the course highlights different research topics, methods and approaches to social work research. Members of academic staff contribute examples from their own research to introduce research themes and insights into the research process. This introduces students to the research being carried out in the social work subject area, thus emphasising the research led nature of social work education at the University.
Course reading has been carefully selected to direct students to some of the best studies in or relevant to social work. Students are able to widen their substantive social work research knowledge and their knowledge of research methods by consulting this reading.

The assessment is in two parts:
Part A is formative and consists of a 500 word outline research proposal for the student¿s dissertation. Formative feedback will be provided for part A.
Part B is a 3500 word summative assignment, providing a more detailed research proposal for the student¿s dissertation, reflecting on the issues raised in the course. Students must pass the summative assignment to proceed to the dissertation.
