SummaryThe pressures on natural resources are particularly pertinent within the agri-food context. In developing countries changing climates have led to pressures on water and soil resource availability. Further ambitions to meet growing nutritional requirements may lead to intensification of systems which have future pressures on the maintenance of these natural resources. Examining these issues through an economic lens provides an approach to understanding how agri-food supply chains incentives and disincentives the protection of natural resources to meet sustainable development goals.
Course description This course will provide an economic approach to understanding management of soil, water with wider climate dialogues for sustainable development in both developing and developed agri-food supply chains. The economics of climate change mitigation and adaptation will be introduced alongside methods to appraise optimal adaptation pathways. The course will discuss potential synergies and trade-offs between mitigation and adaptation and make reference to food security in the light of natural resource economics.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Critically evaluate the role of natural resources in agricultural economic development;
  2. Appraise the efficiency of several interventions to mitigate climate change effects within agri-food supply chains;
  3. Analyse approaches that can be used to appraise climate change mitigation and adaptation measures, and the limitations of the approaches.
