Course options

Students wishing to progress towards legal practice should note that passes in the following courses are required to qualify as a solicitor in Scotland: 'Commercial Law (Ordinary) LAWS08131', 'Business Entities LAWS08134', 'Public Law and Individual Rights LAWS08132', 'Evidence (Ordinary) LAWS08141', 'Delict LAWS08135', 'Criminal Law (Ordinary) LAWS08142'; 'Property Law (Ordinary) LAWS08133', and 'Succession and Trust Law LAWS08130'.

All 60 credits of optional courses can therefore be drawn from Law Level 8 courses.

Course options

Students should note that in order to progress to Honours in International Relations, they must achieve an average of at least 50 in their compulsory IR subjects in the second year.

Students who opt to spend their third year abroad will be expected to do the equivalent of 120 credits.

Students studying abroad in third year who opt to take Route A (Law dissertation option) are required to take the course "LAWS10214 Advanced Legal Writing (Online)" during their Study Abroad Year; students who opt to take Route B (IR dissertation option) will be asked to find a replacement course for "PLIT10106 Research Design in PIR" during their third year abroad, or take it upon their return to Edinburgh in their fourth year.

Students intending to study a Dissertation in Law in year 4 must take "LAWS10202 Advanced Legal Writing" and select courses from group A.

Students intending to study a Dissertation in International Relations must take "PLIT10106 Research Design in PIR" and select courses from group B.
