Summary | This course surveys the relationship between structural engineering and architecture from the late nineteenth century until the present day. The course deals with the manner in which engineers utilised the new materials, construction processes and design tools that emerged during this period; Specific themes that are covered are the emergence of new structural forms, the conflict between analysis and intuition in the design of structure, the increasing industrialisation of the construction industry and the engineer as architect and builder. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- A knowledge of the contribution (symbolic and literal) which structural and materials technology has made to the development of Modern architectures.
- A knowledge of the prominent structural engineers of the twentieth century and of their principal works.
- A knowledge of the different attitudes adopted by engineers and designers towards their use of materials, structural form and the architectural expression of structural form.
- A knowledge of the methodology and vocabulary of scholarship and criticism as it may be applied to the field of architectural technology.
