|Summary||This course is suitable for complete beginners and aims to equip students with a very basic grounding in written and spoken Chinese.This course is not suitable for students with previous knowledge of Chinese. This course is not available to native or near-native speakers of Chinese. If in doubt, contact the Course Organiser.
This course runs in both semester 1 and semester 2.
On successful completion of this course students will have the option of taking Introductory Chinese Language 2 (ASST07006 in Semester 2), which follows on from Introductory Chinese Language.
All students take all elements of assessment, including the examination. Auditing (Class Only) is not allowed.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- be familiar with the basic principles of the speaking and writing systems of the Chinese language.
- have a good command of about 300 Chinese characters and some basic grammar and sentence structures that are used to express events in the present.
- have a basic understanding of China and its customs and ways of life.

||This course is open to all students as a credit bearing course, or over and above their full credit load, as a non credit bearing course.
Auditing this course is not allowed. You must be enrolled as CE (Class and Assessment including centrally arranged exam).
Language students may only take this course if it over and above their full credit load, as a non credit bearing course.
Visiting students may only take the course for credits.
