|Summary||A research project tailored to the student's area of interest which will develop conceptual and analytical skills specific to that area, leading to a dissertation describing original research. There may be the possibility to undertake project work on external industrial placement, subject to availability and selection criteria.

||Other requirements|| Pre-requisites : Successful completion of 120 credits in the appropriate level 11 courses for the degree programme with a weighted average at or above Grade C, or with the permission of the Head of School.
Co-requisites : This course may only be taken as part of a Taught Postgraduate Masters degree in Materials Chemistry or Medicinal and Biological Chemistry.
Prohibited combinations : Graduates from Edinburgh University BSc (Hons) or MChem/MChemphys (Hons) degrees in Chemistry or Chemical Physics may only take this course with the approval of the Head of School

||Assessment by dissertation according to the University of Edinburgh Postgraduate Assessment Regulations, http://www.aaps.ed.ac.uk/regulations/
||Theacademic supervisor interacts with the student during the projectand discussion of the student's progress takes place during regular meetings. Written feedback is provided directly from supervisor to the student on the literature review and project report assignments. Written feedback is also returned to the student as part of the final assessment.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a deep understanding of the chosen research area acquired through literature study and interaction with colleagues
- Show competence in a range of routine and advanced skills (technical, IT etc) by effectively applying academic knowledge in the research lab.
- Demonstrate advanced skills in critical analysis and interpretation of data, offering professional-level insight and showing creativity in problem solving.
- Communicate research findings at a professional standard through written and oral presentations and participate fully in group discussions.
- Adapt to a research environment and to function effectively alongside qualified practitioners and gain the confidence to make independent decisions about the progress of the research project.
