| Summary | This is a dissertation preparation course for students on the MSc in Comparative Literature and Masters by Research degree programmes. The initial four sessions will look at the general principles for the dissertation and then at examples of good practice. The remainder of the sessions will be Q & A based and linked to the 10-minute dissertation presentation and the dissertation proposal. |
| Course description |
The course will begin with group sessions on how to prepare for the dissertation (including writing a thesis statement, structuring and chaptering, providing supporting evidence, general research tips and how to write a dissertation proposal). The first two sessions will address general research principles and then the next two sessions will look at specific examples using past dissertations that are examples of good practice. The remainder of the sessions will be Q & A led. Students will be asked to upload a 10-minute presentation of their dissertation topic.

Students will be graded on a Pass/Fail basis.
1x 10 minute presentation of dissertation topic (30%)
1 x 1500 word dissertation proposal (70%)

| Feedback |
Students will receive written feedback from the course organiser in response to their in-class presentations; they will also receive written feedback following their written submission. The course's discussion forum will provide opportunity for ongoing feedback among students. All students will be invited to meet the course organiser and MSc programme director during weekly office hours, to seek clarification and further details on any aspect of their ongoing assessment. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Formulate a research problem, appropriate to their respective MSc programme;
- Demonstrate their awareness of the methods appropriate for dealing with different modes of literary and cultural research;
- Demonstrate their competence not only in the preparation of bibliographies and research documents, but also their capabilities for identifying and articulating possible research projects in literary and cultural studies.
