SummaryThis course is taught entirely online and is an option on the MSc Mental Health in Children and Young People: Psychological Approaches (OL); it can also be taken as a CPD option. The course will introduce students to critical psychology and a number of associated theories. It will encourage students to question what psychology is and what it does, paying particular attention to developmental psychology theories and psychological and psychiatric explanations of children's mental health difficulties.
Course description The aims of this course are as follows:

- To examine the practical and philosophical implications of debates between
mainstream and critical approaches to psychology.
- To critically examine theories of child developmental.
- To critically examine commonly accepted explanations of childhood mental
health difficulties.
- To consider alternative explanations of childhood mental health difficulties.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a firm understanding of a range of critical theories.
  2. Draw on social constructionist accounts to evaluate psychological knowledge in relation to children.
  3. Demonstrate skills in critical discourse analysis and its application to discourses of children's mental health.
  4. Demonstrate skills in reflexivity in relation to the production of psychological knowledge.
