|Summary||This course provides an introduction to psychological research design and methods.
Research Methods in Applied Psychology aims to introduce students to a range of basic research methods in clinical psychology. The course caters for students from a range of backgrounds, including those who are new to research. The topics covered include: framing research questions, observational and experimental designs, data collection approaches, systematic literature review and ethical considerations of research. The course explores both the theoretical underpinnings of research design and the practical considerations and constraints of real-life research. It is taught in a flipped classroom format with online lectures, activities and readings each week followed by a face-to-face workshop.

||Assessments for this course will be administered online. It is important that you take your assessment in a location with stable and strong internet connection where you will not be disturbed.
The summative assessment is four online assessments in weeks 3, 6, 9 and 12, each worth 25% of the overall grade. Assessments will be open book/note but scheduled and timed. The window will be open for 24 hours, so that you may choose any 2-hour block to complete your assessment during the 24-hour window. Once you start your assessment, you cannot stop. It is our intention that you will receive your mark and feedback electronically after the assessment window closes.
||Learning is assessed through formative and summative means.
The formative assignment will consist of a practice assessment, in week 2, administered in the same format as the summative assignment.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical and contextualised understanding of the key issues in research design and ethics.
- Evaluate the appropriateness of different methods of primary/secondary data collection based on issues of design, analysis and population of interest.
- Demonstrate research literacy through critical appraisal and synthesis of research.
- Demonstrate logical links between research questions, design and (primary/secondary) data collection.
