SummaryThis course is focused on investigating materials and techniques towards the exploration of surfaces and structures. The course is comprised of 3 projects bringing together research, practical development and presentation of ideas. As a discipline, textiles increasingly extends beyond fabric and fibre. With practical and theoretical challenges, students will be introduced to a range of materials, processes and techniques associated within and beyond the textiles discipline. Across natural and synthetic fibres and materials, via digital and analogue methods and those that cross both options, students will be encouraged to approach challenges with curiosity and an open mind. Projects will also begin to raise awareness of embedding sustainable thinking into textile and material development.
This course is designed to reinforce learning from core courses Textiles 1A, What is Textiles?, and 1B The practice of textiles in Art & Design, and to extend skills through practical exploration.
Course description This course introduces basic technical competences and challenges assumptions of materials and techniques within the discipline.¿

Along with traditional skills and approaches, students will be encouraged to consider emerging technologies and unexpected sources to drive new ways of thinking to challenge perceived norms within the discipline. With an increasing awareness of social agendas and the ways we live and use resources, projects explore basic materials and environmentally informed processes to direct themes, for example balancing health and wellbeing with aesthetics within the design process.¿¿
Introduction to key equipment and techniques, both analogue and digital, will be embedded within projects, encouraging individuals to challenge methods and materials through personal exploration.
Techniques will be varied and exploratory.

The course will enable the students to:-
1. Investigate the competent use of an appropriate range of practical, material and theoretical methods associated within and beyond Textiles. This will be demonstrated through research files, sketchbooks and notebooks.
2. Develop, evaluate and record core theories and applications of the materials, techniques and methods explored within the projects during the course. This will be demonstrated in ways appropriate to the specific project or investigation which may include :-technical notebooks, sketchbooks, research files, video, blogs.
3. Working to project briefs apply knowledge, skills and understanding effectively in resolved outcomes. This will be demonstrated through the presentation of finished projects.
