SummaryThis course enables students to develop a personal, integrated, critical and reflective design approach appropriate to their chosen discipline and define a direction for their professional career. Students work on self-selected and self-generated projects within a studio environment, developing their outcomes for the professional context through design books, online portfolios and websites. They will also show awareness of the professional context through the writing of critical reviews and the preparation of costume budget costings.
Course description Students will develop their design work, researching ideas and design layouts which will communicate their design process and resolved outcomes to a professional standard through the design and production of design books using digital design tools, combined with the creation of a personal website and online portfolio.

There will be technical design support for the development of their costume illustrations and supporting work as digital presentations. This will enable the student to lay out their design presentation in a professional manner in book form. The book presentation will contain a synopsis and explanation of the design concept, an edited selection of key research images, an edited selection of key design development drawing, fabric manipulation, toiling, and final illustrations with supporting technical drawings and textile samples. Each of the design illustrations will be accompanied by text explaining character interpretation and how this relates to the general production concept and the specific clothing and fabric choices that have been made. Using their accumulated studio design work, students will prepare a personal website and online portfolio.

Students will develop their ability to edit and present their work for ease of dissemination to a client audience. Students will also undertake the writing of several critical reviews, analysing the design elements of contemporary theatre productions, cinema, or exhibitions, showing their awareness of the professional design context. They will also prepare costume budget costings.

Throughout the course students will be supported at all stages through group discussion, design tutorials and practical workshop tuition. They will use drawing, prototyping, and digital tools as exploratory media. Group and one-to-one tutorials will give the students the opportunity to discuss and develop their ideas and skills.

Additional Costs Students will have to meet costs of printing and assembly of design books. These will vary from student to student, depending on individual requirements.

LO1: 25% - Evidenced by two well-structured, laid out and professionally produced Design Books.
LO2: 15% - Evidenced by a series of two Critical Reviews and two sets of costume costings budgets.
LO3: 15% - Evidenced by an outward-facing professional Website/online portfolio.
LO4: 45% - Evidenced by two Design Books, the content of which clearly articulates a thorough and well-resolved design process.
Feedback Formative feedback will be provided throughout the course in the form of tutorials and group-work.
Written Formative feedback will be provided normally in week 6.
Summative assessment will take place at the end of the course.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Explore original, distinctive and highly coherent approaches to design, layout and production.
  2. Communicate awareness of the professional costume design context as evidenced through the writing of two 600 word critical reviews and the preparation of two sets of costume costings budgets.
  3. Use a variety of appropriate practical and creative techniques to communicate personal design outcomes.
  4. Use a variety of appropriate practical and creative techniques to communicate wide-ranging research, an in-depth design process and personal design outcomes.
