|Summary||This course is aimed at prospective primary school teachers who have a particular interest in mathematics. It aims to develop knowledge and abilities that will equip students for future roles as subject leaders of mathematics in primary education.
The course will provide students with a broad knowledge of the field of mathematics education. There will be opportunities for critical exploration of principal theories of learning and teaching mathematics. Students will also investigate a range of topical concerns in mathematics education. Observations of learning and micro-teaching opportunities will allow in-depth examination of theory in practice.
The course will also support students in extending their knowledge of the discipline of mathematics its nature, history and applications and their ability to communicate this knowledge to pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider public.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate critical understanding of principal theories of learning and teaching in the field of mathematics education.
- Demonstrate specialist skills required to scaffold mathematical learning, including the ability to analyse observations of learning in relation to relevant theory and research findings.
- Critically analyse arguments relating to issues of current concern in mathematics education.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the way in which study of a chosen area of mathematics has developed.
- Communicate mathematical knowledge to a range of audiences, drawing on ideas encountered in the course to facilitate learning.
