|Summary||This course considers the factors relevant in building a research profile, particularly near the start of an academic career. It will include:
o the UK and international research environment;
o research policy, funding and organisation;
o factors important in making strong funding application;
o knowledge exchange and impact.
A key focus of the course will be in understanding and developing strategic approaches to obtaining funding, building research networks, increasing visibility and publishing.

||A written assignment (between 2000 and 2500 words) on one of the following topics:
o A personal five-year research strategy and funding plan (or plan for a research group) meeting both individual goals and the goals of the School/College; this could include: scoping of national and international funding sources, analysis of strategy and policy related to discipline, contingency plans and assessment of risk, an assessment of balance between research and teaching activities within an individual's current role.
o A personal 3-year plan for increasing ones research profile and influence as an academic; this could include: strategies for, and demonstrated progress in, achieving visibility, building and sustaining research networks, publication plans and other demonstrated research outputs.
o A personal plan for public engagement/knowledge exchange and the demonstration of impact; this could include: plans for relevant skills development, an analysis of how the skills will impact other areas of the academic role, plans for developing materials/resources/events/activities for various audiences, reflections on current issues associated with the public understand of science/public policy and governance.
The written assignment should draw appropriately on a review of relevant literature, and government/funding body reports and guidelines, and on a review of activities currently undertaken by fellow academics in the relevant discipline area.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- demonstrated a critical awareness of the research funding and policy landscape for their discipline
- demonstrated creativity in their application of knowledge and understanding to knowledge exchange activities and the impact agenda;
- an informed understanding of the various factors shaping ones research profile allowing critical reflections of their approach to career planning.
