Particular attention will be paid to the way in which formal innovations have arisen from efforts to find an authentic voice which might reflect collective as well as individual experience. The option will also explore how many writers have chosen to use fantastic elements to challenge the conventions of literary realism and thereby express other perceptions of historical reality.
