SummaryA compulsory course for MEL Single Honours in Italian and MEL+OSNAL (Other Subject Not A Language) students, which carries 10 credits and aims at improving students' grasp of a variety of Italian idioms, registers and styles, as well as enhancing the ability to convey them appropriately into English.
Course description Class activities will include summary translation, polished translation, and comparative analysis of published translations. Selected Italian texts will be analysed and discussed in groups and collectively during the class hour and online (Learn discussion board).
Course weighting has changed to 100% Coursework.

Feedback Students will regularly receive oral feedback on their written work in class. This will be provided collectively through analyses of common practices and mistakes. Individual written feedback will also be provided in detail on their coursework assignments. Tutors will be happy to discuss results and feedback during office hours or on students¿ request, by appointment.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Analyse complex Italian texts, showing an advanced knowledge of the language and cultural references.
  2. Distinguish between different styles, registers and idioms in English and Italian.
  3. Recognise typical problems encountered in translation, and critically evaluate the use of translation skills, such as equivalence, adaptation and compensation.
  4. Convey complex Italian texts faithfully into fluent, precise/creative English prose.
  5. Make decisions and solve problems while working effectively, independently or in a team.
