| Course description |
Both the oral component (Oral for Russian) and the written component (Language Paper 1) build on knowledge and skills acquired in earlier years, and develop both writing and oral skills further, in language classes and through independent study.
Language Paper 1 consists of two parts: Prose and Writing in Style, each of which is taught for one Semester (Writing in Style in Semester 1, Prose in Semester 2). Both parts of the written component mobilise the accumulated knowledge of all levels of Russian (grammar, vocabulary, syntax), developing language skills to the CEFR level equivalent to C1+/C2. They advance skills in producing a coherent and sophisticated text in Russian on a complex subject, summarising information from various sources and constriction and reconstruction of arguments.

| Pre-requisites | Entry to any language course above introductory level is subject to a language test by the relevant subject area on arrival and at the discretion of the course organiser. Students entering this course should come with a B2/C1 of Russian as a minimum. Students who do not perform at this level will be moved to ELCR08003 Russian Language 2 |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Synthesize information and language material from the source texts and use these as guidance for producing a coherent and well-structured text in Russian; produce a free translation of an English source text into Russian
- Demonstrate well-developed aural skills in understanding a television or radio programme, or a lecture in Russian, including understanding of socio-cultural contexts and ability to discuss, in a sophisticated way, the subject matter of their presentations
- Produce a clear, complex sophisticated presentation on a complex cultural, literary, linguistic, socio-political or other subject, which develops argument both critically and systematically
- Employ Russian complex and idiomatic grammar and syntax structures and broad and stylistically varied vocabulary
- Organise and present ideas within the framework of a structured and reasoned argument.
