Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Demonstrate and work with a knowledge and understanding of the principles and terminology of semiconductor physics and semiconductor devices.
Use prior knowledge of mathematical tools (algebraic manipulation, calculus) and fundamental electrical theory to derive and work with mathematical relationships to be used as models predicting the observed interrelations between important semiconductor parameters such as conductivity, carrier concentration, mobility and temperature. Also to use the same background and tools to understand and derive the mathematical relations describing the operating characteristics of semiconductor devices, including diodes, photodiodes, and transistors.
Evaluate, integrate and analyse the knowledge and understanding gained from 1 and 2, to develop a broad qualitative understanding of some more complex semiconductor and device behaviours, and to be able describe them in physically accurate terms.
Integrate knowledge of semiconductors and devices to understand and be able to describe qualitatively the technology and sequencing of processes required to fabricate semiconductor devices.
