SummaryStudents attend weekly 2-hour tutor-led workshops presenting work of their own and engaging in the detailed analysis and criticism of work by the other students. They also attend a weekly 2-hour seminar exploring specific techniques and issues of creative writing, and the statements and theories of practitioners. There are two pathways through the core course, one focusing on prose and one on poetry.

Additional Information (Assessment) A portfolio of work submitted at the end of the semester deriving from topics addressed in the seminar series: either prose fiction not less than 8,000 and not more than 10,000 words; or poetry c. 15 pages. Presentation of own work at least twice in the semester.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. ¿ identify, conceptualise and define formal elements of craft in their chosen field (poetry or fiction) within published works and within works by their peers
  2. ¿ remain open to criticism and respond effectively and creatively to feedback on their own creative work
  3. ¿ work from initial conception through multiple drafts to the final version of a creative piece within their chosen field (fiction or poetry)
  4. transfer editorial skills and creative abilities from one context to another
  5. ¿ Analyse creative works within their chosen field (fiction or poetry) work with a focus on craft effectiveness and articulate strengths and weaknesses in a piece of writing in a constructive manner
