SummaryThis course provides an introduction to the use of qualitative methodologies within Geography.
Course description Course work is designed to give students experience in using the methods to evaluate real world information and thereby gain insights into the characteristics of the techniques and their overall value as a means of study.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. to develop a broad and integrated understanding of qualitative methods, their principles and appropriate application
  2. to have a critical awareness of the values and limitations of the techniques and to have an awareness of the need for careful interpretation
  3. to gain practical experience of the methods introduced so that students are aware of a selection of the principal and specialised techniques of data collection methods and analysis used in Geography
  4. students are expected to use the methods studied to collect and analyse real world data and therefore practise at a professional level, taking account of research ethics
  5. in the assessed project work, students are expected to demonstrate their understanding of one of the methods introduced during the lectures.

Graduate Attributes and Skills Students will be able to demonstrate skills in the collection, organisation and analysis of qualitative data using real world examples and working independently at a professional level.
Students will also be able to demonstrate an ability to acquire and apply specialist practical knowledge.
Finally, students will be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Additional Class Delivery Information The course is taught as a 5 week block at the beginning of semester 1.
