SummaryThis course, which runs fortnightly during both semesters, introduces students to postgraduate level independent research in Renaissance and Early Modern studies through a consideration of primary source materials.
Course description Taking advantage of the wealth of the collections in Edinburgh, classes will largely take place on site, and will include discussions of Renaissance and Baroque paintings, drawings and prints; manuscripts, maps and early printed books, archival documents, scientific documents and instruments, as well as a huge range of domestic, liturgical and other objects available at the National Galleries, Museums and Library of Scotland, as well as the University's own important collections. Curators, archivists and librarians at these institutions will be involved in the delivery of the course alongside lecturers from a variety of disciplines.

Students will learn practical skills in how to use various different types of evidence dating from this period, including paleography, which will equip them for independent research. We will also consider how this period is understood today, and what role cultural institutions such as Museums and Galleries have to play in forming this understanding.
