SummaryThis course discusses the salient features of the mystical dimension within Islam and covers the historical background of the tradition and the foremost personalities who played a major role in its development. Moreover, it will examine the primary concepts promoted in Sufism and their manifestation, in both a religious and social context, through translations of the classical works that present both Sufi theory and practice.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. outline the history of Islamic mysticism.
  2. explain key mystical concepts, controversies and debates, and their broader religious and intellectual contexts.
  3. understand and explain Islamic mysticism's social and literary manifestations.
  4. critically examine and interpret historical materials.
  5. read and understand various types of Sufi texts in translation.
