SummaryThe course is a core subject-specific preparation for students who wish to carry out research on the Middle East. It will explore some of the tensions between area studies and the disciplines and introduce key paradigms and approaches to the study of the region, with the aim of helping students develop their own research frameworks. Sessions will include presentations from other academic staff as well as student-led discussions on pre-assigned readings.

At successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
a)Critically evaluate the key theoretical debates surrounding research on the Middle East.
b)Display advanced awareness of the relationship between different disciplinary approaches to the Middle East.
c)Display practical familiarity with the implications of a range of research methods in the context of research on the Middle East.
d)Formulate a theoretically informed plan for research on the Middle East.
e)Display an advanced understanding of the political dimensions of research on the Middle East.
