|Summary||This course explores properties of syntax and syntactic change in the history of English. (Some aspects of morphology may be included where relevant.) We will deal with selected changes and discuss different accounts, which will also introduce various approaches to syntactic change more generally. In addition, we will look at English historical syntax from a more practical perspective by collecting and analysing some data from electronic text corpora of Early and/or Late Modern English texts.

|Pre-requisites||Visiting students should have completed at least 3 Linguistics/Language Sciences courses at grade B or above. We will only consider University/College level courses.

| On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of some important syntactic changes in the history of English, as well as of different accounts of these changes;
- relate these changes to models for the description of syntax and/or syntactic change, as appropriate;
- collect and analyse syntactic data from the Modern English period;
- extract data from electronic text corpora.
